Fall Into Great Autumn Activities At Your Library
For some, October signals the start of the changing seasons and a break from the Florida heat. For others, it may mean fun costumes, spooky thrills or pumpkin-spiced everything. For me, this October brings big news and updates on how your library system is working to bring more value to the community.
The much-anticipated Horizon West Branch is nearly ready for opening. During the last two weeks, the collection, furniture and supplies have arrived and staff have been busy shelving books and bringing the vision to life. I hope you will visit this beautiful new location and explore all it has to offer in the coming months. Keep an eye on our website and social channels for the latest news.
Construction continues at our new Lake Nona Branch and you can stay up to date on the progress and sign up for the Lake Nona e-newsletter at ocls.org/lake-nona-updates. The renovation project at Orlando Public Library is also underway. Materials from the west side of first floor have been relocated throughout the building to keep everything accessible to customers throughout the construction process. Last month, new automatic doors were installed as we update our public entrance. Visit ocls.org/orlando-public-library-updates for all the latest news on that project.
This month is filled with themed, hands-on programs for adults and kids. If you’re an adult looking for new ideas for Halloween and fall crafts and projects, try beaded bookmarks, book page garlands, an instructor-led acrylic painting class or jewelry making; there are classes across the system. We also have lots of fun, performance based programming for kids and families to enjoy together this month including a Mad Science Spooktacular, Painted Raven’s Native American Flute Performance, Orlando Philharmonic’s Symphony Storytime Spooky Serenade and DJ City Beats Halloween Dance Party and it’s all free with your library card. There are lots of treats at our programs this month as well, and you’ll also find some ideas for simple, delicious activities at home.
I hope you’ll make time this month to discover the value your library brings, connect with your community and enjoy all that your library system has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you – whether you’re visiting a new branch, joining a program or simply finding your next great read.
