This month, the CFCArts Youth Theatre program is bringing to life a beloved literary classic, The Giver, at the CFCArts Black Box Theater, presenting a unique, educational opportunity for youth of all ages.

Are you an Orange County Library System cardholder? If so, you’re in for a treat! OCLS’s Local Wanderer program, often referred to as the “culture pass,” allows cardholders to explore museums, concerts, sporting events, and more, all with the power of their library card. And yes, that includes tickets to Central Florida Community Arts (CFCArts) performances!
At the time of publication, Local Wanderer tickets for The Giver are available for all three 7 p.m. shows, on February 23-25.

The Giver
This adaptation of Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award-winning book brings this emotional tale to life. Winner of the AATE Distinguished Play Award, The Giver asks both children and adults compelling questions about how we want our world to be.
Jonas’ world is perfect. Everything is under control and safe. There is no war or fear, or pain. There are also no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. But when Jonas turns 12, he is chosen for special training from The Giver—to receive and keep the memories of the community. The Giver is the only person who holds the memories of real pain and real joy. Now Jonas will learn the truth about life—and the hypocrisy of his utopian world. Through this astonishing and moving adaptation, discover what it means to grow up, grow wise, and take control of your destiny.
Co-Curricular Connection
The Giver is a common part of Central Florida school curriculum, particularly for the 8th grade, and witnessing its onstage adaptation will not only deepen students’ understanding of the narrative and themes but also enhance their appreciation for literature and the performing arts. It’s a powerful way to bring the text to life and stimulate intellectual curiosity.
Peer Production
This production is unique as it’s brought to life by our Youth Troupe performers in grades 5-12, making the characters and their journeys even more relatable to young audiences. It’s a testament to the creativity, talent, and hard work of youth in the arts, offering students a mirror to their own potential. With a run time (including intermission) falling under two hours, this production is also approachable for students as young as third grade.

Seeing the story unfold on stage can ignite an interest in literature, encourage empathy, and foster a deeper comprehension of complex themes. It’s an engaging way to supplement their learning and inspire a love for reading.
