From the Director, October 2021

When this pandemic first started, I remember having conversations about how we could best serve customers, even though we couldn’t invite them to gather in our buildings for storytimes, author talks and computer classes. Our team hustled to find the right tools to convert everything we do to a virtual format, and I must say, I think they did a fine job creating solutions so your family can enjoy the library from home.

This month, we’re going to have our second pandemic Halloween, and we’re celebrating with take-and-make crafts, virtual events you log in and watch online, and (of course) candy! Between October 25 and October 30, stop by to pick up candy and a craft – bring the kids and wear your costume, if you’d like! Then join us online for Halloween virtual escape rooms, spooky storytimes, Halloween trivia, candy experiments and more. On October 30, we’ll host the Mad Science Spooky Spectacular live
online. Adults, you can enjoy Halloween with the library, too. We’ve got a Spooktacular Reading Challenge running all month long – participate in the challenge for a chance to win prizes. We also have a very special author event on October 22, featuring New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix, whose titles include My Best Friend’s Exorcism and The Final Girl Support Group.

Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15, and we also have more online events that celebrate Hispanic culture, art, food and music. Join us for a livestream performance of award-winning kids’ performers Evan and Vanessa on October 14, learn to make ropa vieja on October 13, or join us for a preschool storytime about Peru on October 15. You can also visit Orlando Public Library downtown to see Origins, an art show featuring the work of local Hispanic artists Alberto Gomez and Carlos Alberto Quintero.

We hope you’ll visit us soon – either online or in person. The programs I’ve mentioned above and the ones listed in this flipbook are just a sampling of what we have to offer.
