Best Books of 2025: Youth

white marble letters spell out THE BEST BOOKS OF 2025 - YOUTH against a blue background

This year marked an exciting first for our library: the creation of our Best Books list for babies, children, and young adults! Two of us had the privilege of leading this new committee, and with a wonderful team of librarians, we set out to find the most remarkable (and often overlooked) books of the year.

From board books to epic teen adventures, we read and reviewed a wide variety of titles. Our goal wasn’t to feature bestsellers but to uncover hidden gems that might have slipped past readers’ attention.

Our committee shared insights and discussed favorites. We championed stories that made us laugh, think, and sometimes even tear up. Each librarian brought unique perspectives, helping us create lists that reflect the diversity and creativity of our community.

We sought books that spark curiosity and empathy; while celebrating the many ways stories connect us. Representation and inclusivity also guided our choices. We wanted young readers to see themselves in the books we recommended and to discover new experiences and voices along the way. The final lists include picture books, novels, graphic novels, manga, and nonfiction. A little something for everyone!

A few titles quickly became favorites

For our youngest readers, Calm Your Roar Like a Dinosaur is a sweet and silly introduction to mindfulness. This charming picture book teaches progressive muscle relaxation, a self-guided technique that helps children calm both body and mind. With colorful illustrations and playful text, it encourages little ones to “roar, relax, and reset.”

Written and illustrated by two award winning authors, J Vs. K shows what happens when you stop trying to compete and instead work together. A comedic tale about two 10-year-old versions of the authors trying to create the best book ever, it’s both a how-to in book writing, and fun story about kids trying to up each other, and create art along the way.

For older readers, Wizard of Earthsea: The Graphic Novel offers a breathtaking reimagining of Ursula K. Le Guin’s classic fantasy. Fred Fordham’s expressive illustrations bring new depth to Le Guin’s timeless tale of magic, mentorship, and self-discovery.

After lots of reading and lively discussions, we’re proud of the final list we created. It is filled with titles that deserve a spot on every reader’s bookshelf. We hope these books encourage you and your young readers to explore, imagine, and discover something new. Whether you’re looking for a comforting bedtime story or a book that makes you see the world a little differently, you’ll find something to love in this year’s Best Books of 2025 selections.
