A Month of Music, Film, Medieval Merriment and LEGO Creativity at Your Library
Learning and creativity come alive in many forms and this month, your library strikes every chord with an inspiring blend of music, film, art and a family-friendly week of medieval pageantry.
The submission window is open now through May 15 for our annual Melrose Film Festival, celebrating the art of visual storytelling in short films. Last year featured an exciting line up of films and I’m looking forward to seeing entries from filmmakers from Florida and beyond at this year’s festival. Categories and all the information can be found at filmfreeway.com/MelroseFilmFestival.
March is the month for music. Our Washington Park Branch hosts A World of Color and Shape, a jazz and art program, on March 2 and 16. Adults can unwind to the soothing sounds of jazz while they create their own contemporary art piece. On Saturday, March 21, Music in the Library returns to Winter Garden Branch with Saturday Jazz. This all ages show features clarinetist Joe Fritz and guitarist Martin Sensiper performing legendary swing and jazz hits spanning the ‘30s to the ‘60s.
Fairview Shores Branch will transport you back to medieval times March 16-21 with a week of imaginative events during Renaissance Fairview. The week is packed with events for every age and interest: themed storytimes and a royal tea party for families, hands-on medieval bookbinding for teens and period trivia and illuminated manuscript creation for adults.
We look forward to hosting builders and designers of all ages at our LEGOpalooza event at Orlando Public Library on Sunday March 29. You’ll experience hands-on and virtual LEGO activities: create LEGO-themed crafts and build with LEGO club, see amazing LEGO builds, step into another world with LEGO VR and practice your programming skills with LEGO Education Spike. Kids can enter their own LEGO build (like the original build featured on the cover by a young library user) for a chance to win prizes. Whether you’re a LEGO master builder or just starting your brick journey, there’s something at this event for everyone.
Can’t make it to LEGOpalooza? We have LEGO programming at all 15 OCLS locations every month for kids, families, teens and adults. Use your imagination and build with fellow brick fans at LEGO Club. Create and program machines with LEGO Education Spike to explore STEAM concepts and problem solving.
However you choose to use your library, we want it to be a place where imagination and learning meet opportunity and value. I invite you to explore, create and connect with us all month long.
