This summer, the Orange County Library System held an art contest, which challenged children to “Draw a Better World.” The contest was hosted in partnership with The Crayola Experience and winners throughout the county received free admission tickets for their winning entries. The winner for the Orlando Public Library was 8-year-old, Blankner Elementary School student, Elizabeth L. Her creative vision of a better world depicts a farm setting with animals, a water tower and a hot air balloon floating above an open field. Elizabeth’s favorite part of her picture is the animals, especially the sheep. She told us that the sheep were inspired by her very own stuffed animal pal at home, Lambchop. She did not draw her favorite animal in the picture, which is an elephant. She said it is her favorite animal because both of their names start with an “E.”

When asked if she had a difficult time drawing anything in the picture, she replied: “No, everything was easy.” Elizabeth's mother, Bethany, says Elizabeth practices every day and with several different mediums, too. In addition to drawing, she likes to paint with oils and create clay sculptures. Elizabeth can see herself being an artist when she grows up and told us that she first was inspired to draw after watching her mother draw. As a thank you, Elizabeth plans to take her mother to the Crayola Experience with her winning tickets. When asked what Crayola color she would be, Elizabeth quickly replied, “Blue, because it is my favorite color.”

All entries handed in for the “Draw a Better World Crayola Contest” at the Orlando Public Library location will be on display in the children’s department. Congratulations to Elizabeth and thank you to everyone who participated!
