Connect With Your Community Through Library Events and Programs
It’s the start of fall and OCLS is bringing a new season of events, classes and programs to give customers fresh opportunities to learn and connect in the community. From cooking demonstrations to book clubs, technology classes to health and wellness programs, we offer Orange County residents and visitors a variety of free ways to develop new skills and grow.
This month, seven of our branches will each offer a three-part series of classes on the free graphic design application Canva. From the basics of navigating the program to creating custom presentations and social media campaigns, the classes can help guide and inspire your next project. If attending in-person at a branch isn’t convenient, we are also offering the classes virtually.
Kids and caregivers, dress up in your favorite costume and come out to our annual Halloween event, Trick or Treat Safe Zone, Sunday, October 12, from 1–3 p.m. This family event takes place at both Orlando Public Library and Orange County Regional History Center located right next door to the library and it’s all free. This event is a great way to have some safe, spooky fun with live music, a Mad Science show, crafts, a scavenger hunt, games and, of course, candy. You can get more information on what’s happening at the History Center by visiting thehistorycenter.org/TrickorTreat. We hope to see you there!
In September, Orlando Public Library began a four-month series celebrating the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birthday with events and programs celebrating the timeless author’s genius and offering insight into her literary world. On October 19, take a sensory tour of Austen’s era through an exploration of the art and music that inspired her and readings of her work. Join us again on October 28 for tea and readings from Jane Austen’s Gothic farce, Northanger Abbey. The Jane Austen series continues through December 13; visit ocls.org/JaneAusten for a complete listing of themed events.
Last month we announced the author for our second annual Lillian Louise Pharr Signature Author Series and tickets go on sale October 3. The event features Nicholas Sparks, the bestselling and much-loved author of The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Nights in Rodanthe and many more. We’re excited to welcome him to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts for an evening of conversation and a look into his inspiration and writing technique. Find out more at ocls.org/NicholasSparks.
I hope you find something that sparks your interest. Sign up for a class, attend a program or check out your next great read to start off this new season.
