Put on your jacket, because it’s Autumn! Let’s celebrate with fall-themed stories and songs!
QUESTIONS:
- Can you name all the seasons?
- What happens in Autumn? (Leaves change color, it gets a little cooler outside, Halloween…)
- Do you like apples? Do you like pumpkins?
READ:
Read any book you may have that mentions Autumn, or related topics like apples, pumpkins, leaves, or scarecrows. If you don’t have one, try a digital title, such as Froggy Picks a Pumpkin by Johnathan London. You can order a book from the library, as well, such as My Autumn Book by Wong Herbert Yee. We’ll also make an Autumn book at the end.
SING:
Instead of singing I’m a Little Teapot, try I’m a Little Pumpkin!
I’m a little pumpkin, orange and round
Here is my stem, there is the ground
When I’m sad I make a frown
But when I’m happy, I turn it all around
COUNT:
For this rhyme, have five pictures of apples ready, and one tree. You can draw them or cut them out. Have your child put the apples on the tree, but don’t glue them down! We’re going to be doing some subtraction! This rhyme is to the tune of Ten in the Bed.
There were five on the tree and the little one said, “roll over, roll over.”
So, they all rolled over and one fell off…
There were four on the tree and the little one said, “roll over, roll over.”
So, they all rolled over and one fell off…
There were three on the tree and the little one said, “roll over, roll over.”
So, they all rolled over and one fell off…
There were two the tree and the little one said, “roll over, roll over.”
So, they all rolled over and one fell off…
There was one on the tree and the little one said, “just right!”
CREATE:
Make your own Autumn collage! Have your child go outside to gather various leaves, flowers, blades of grass or more. Then, have them glue the materials onto paper to make their own collage!
MAKE YOUR OWN AUTUMN BOOK:
- Staple papers together and have each page represent a different amount of leaves.
- Write (or have your child write) the amount of leaves, counting up. (“1 leaf, 2 leaves, 3 leaves…”)
- Illustrate! Draw or cut out pictures for each page.
