This summer, the Orange County Library System encourages you to turn reading into a daily habit with the Summer at Your Library reading challenge. Read for 30 days, tracking your progress. Reading trackers are available at all library locations, and beginning July 1, turn in your completed tracker for a chance to win prizes.

But the reading challenge is about more than just prizes. It’s about building a sustainable, enjoyable reading routine. Even just a few minutes a day boosts language, focus, empathy, curiosity and a love for lifelong learning.
Summer reading programs like this play an important role for readers of all ages. They help children build and maintain reading and language skills during the school break, motivate teens to read and discuss literature, and encourage adults to experience the joy of reading.

Yes, even adults can participate in the challenge! Reading is a socially taught and reinforced skill. Children who see adults enjoying reading are more likely to become readers; making it important for families to model and share reading habits.
For our youngest learners, incorporating the five early literacy practices – reading, writing, talking, singing and playing – each day helps children develop language, comprehension, and a love of learning.
And remember, reading is reading! Whether you’re checking out new releases, literary classics, BookTok favorites, audiobooks, magazines or graphic novels, they all count as reading!
Beyond books, summer is a great time to explore what the library has to offer. From arts and crafts to STEAM programs and technology classes, OCLS offers engaging opportunities for all ages and experience levels.
Look for entertaining, engaging and educational programs for all ages at locations throughout Orange County. Programs include special presenters like Jiggleman, the Reactory Factory: The Science of Sound and the chance to Meet a Gatorland Wrangler.

This summer, visit your library, pick up a reading tracker, and discover how small daily habits can lead to a lifetime of learning.
