Preschool Fun: Pumpkins!

Preschool Fun: Pumpkins!

You know what I love? Pumpkins! Pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin decorating – everything pumpkin! Let’s celebrate pumpkins this week!

These activities are based on Every Child Ready to Read, which helps our friends learn pre-reading skills. We’ll cover Reading, Writing, Talking, Singing and Playing.

TALKING:

  • What color are pumpkins?
  • What shape are pumpkins?
  • What would you like to decorate a pumpkin as?
  • Where do pumpkins come from?

READING:

Read any book you may have that mentions pumpkins. If you don’t have one, try a digital title, such as Pete the Cat Five Little Pumpkins by James Dean. You can order a book from the library, as well, such as Duck & Goose Find a Pumpkin by Tad Hills. We’ll also make a pumpkin book at the end.

PLAYING:

To the tune of Teddy Bear Teddy Bear Turn Around, act like a pumpkin on the ground!

Pumpkin, Pumpkin turn around
Pumpkin, Pumpkin roll on the ground
Pumpkin, Pumpkin reach up high
Pumpkin, Pumpkin stalk to the sky
Pumpkin, Pumpkin reach down low
Pumpkin, Pumpkin find your toes
Pumpkin, Pumpkin smile so sweet
Pumpkin, Pumpkin find your seat

SINGING:

Let’s sing a song about pumpkins and emotions! Make sure to make a face for each feeling!

One little pumpkin smiling, smiling one little pumpkin smiling, smiling
One little pumpkin smiling, smiling, one little pumpkin is happy.

Two little pumpkins pouting, pouting, two little pumpkins pouting, pouting
Two little pumpkins pouting, pouting, two little pumpkins are grumpy.

Three little pumpkins yawning, yawing, three little pumpkins yawning, yawing,
Three little pumpkins yawning, yawing, three little pumpkins are tired.

Four little pumpkins crying, crying, four little pumpkins crying, crying
Four little pumpkins crying, crying, four little pumpkins are sad.

Five little pumpkins are laughing, laughing, five little pumpkins are laughing, laughing
Five little pumpkins are laughing, laughing, five little pumpkins are playing.

LEARNING:

Learn about pumpkins on our kids encyclopedia database! Use your library card to log in.

WRITING:

Make your own pumpkin book.

  • Staple papers together and have each page represent a different emotion.
  • Write (or have your child write) the emotion of the pumpkin on each page. (e.g. Happy pumpkin, Sad pumpkin)
  • Illustrate! Draw or cut out pictures for each page.
