This week let’s waddle like a penguin! These activities are based on Every Child Ready to Read, which helps our friends learn pre-reading skills. We’ll cover Reading, Writing, Talking, Singing and Playing.
TALKING:
- What color are penguins?
- Do they live in hot or cold weather?
- Do they swim? Do they fly? Do they waddle?
- Can you waddle like a penguin for me?
READING:
Read any book you have that mentions penguins. If you don’t have one, request one, such as Penguin and Pinecone: A Friendship Story. Or, you can try a digital title such as Little Penguin Gets the Hiccups. We’ll also make a penguin book at the end.
PLAYING:
Move along with the Penguin Song’s words!
Did you ever a see a penguin, a penguin, a penguin
Did you ever see a penguin waddle this way and that (waddle in one direction, and then the other)
Waddle this way and that way and this way and that way (waddle across the floor in different directions)
Did you ever see a penguin waddle this way and that? (waddle in one direction, and then the other)
You can repeat the song with other things penguins do, such as swim this way and that, eat this way and that, slide this way and that.
Another fun movement song you can do is the Penguin Dance!
SINGING:
Do you know the song Ten in the Bed? What if we had five penguins on a sled? Sing and count along! (Use visuals for your child with this song. You can use anything – penguin toys, penguin pictures, penguin drawings, anything they can physically count!)
There were five on the sled and the little one said “roll over, roll over”
So they all rolled over and one fell off…
There were four on the sled and the little one said “roll over, roll over”

LEARNING:
Learn about penguins on our kids encyclopedia database! Use your library card to log in.
WRITING:
Make your own penguin book:
- Staple papers together and have each page represent a different action.
- Write (or have your child write) what the penguin is doing. (Penguin swims. Penguin slides. Penguins waddles.)
- Illustrate! Draw or cut out pictures for each page.
