From the Director, September 2021

In our August issue, you may have noticed that we announced a gradual return to in-person events starting in September. That announcement was made before the rapid rise in coronavirus cases in Florida. Out of caution and concern for the safety of our customers and staff, the decision has been made to postpone those in-person events, and continue to with our virtual offerings. Visit ocls.info/library-reopening-updates or follow OCLS on social media to stay up-to-date on our reopening process. We have a full schedule great virtual events for you in September.

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place every year from September 15 to October 15, and we would love for you to celebrate it with OCLS. Joining us for a special streaming performance is award-winning children’s musician Sonia De Los Santos. Her music is inspired by Latin American rhythms and U.S. folk traditions, and her songs, performed in both Spanish and English, are perfect for the whole family. There will also be a wide range of events focusing on art, crafts, food and history from Hispanic cultures all around the world. In addition, adults can participate in our Hispanic Heritage Month Beanstack Challenge where they log their reading and complete activities to earn badges.

We will also be celebrating the 4th Annual Melrose Film Festival, featuring over 70 selections from more than 20 countries. This year the festival is all virtual and film selections will be available to stream from Thursday, September 9 through Thursday, September 23. In conjunction with the festival, Melrose Center staff will offer classes exploring several aspects of the film making process, from character development to 3D animation.

Lastly, September is National Library Card Sign-up Month. While most reading this magazine will already have their OCLS library card, you may have friends and family that have yet to discover all that a library card can do. Now is the perfect time to encourage them to get their card!
