In response to unprecedented school closures and the need for learning from home, School Library Journal published a list of resources that are currently available to students, educators, and parents during the COVID-19 outbreak. You can find these resources listed below in blue. Orange County Library System also makes available databases, listed in orange, that are free and accessible from home with your library card number and PIN.
Early Literacy, Lower and Upper Elementary:
KidLit TV: An American Library Association “Great Website for Kids” that offers an engaging and informative “way to discover great children’s books and connect with the people who create them.”
Miss Humblebee’s Academy: This award-winning interactive online curriculum for children preschool through kindergarten ensures learning success by providing strength in core subject areas: math, science and social studies, language and literacy, art and music.
Middle School and High School:
News Literacy Project is providing free access to Checkology, a browser-based platform for students to develop news literacy skills.
The Nonfiction Minute: iNK (Interesting Nonfiction for Kids) is a nonprofit organization that publishes the Nonfiction Minute blog with posts that are “short illustrated written and audio essays about interesting real-world topics and include educator-written suggestions for teachers.”
Opposing Viewpoints: A full-text resource covering today’s hottest social issues. This database brings together all the information you need to research a topic: pro and con viewpoint articles, reference and full-text articles from magazines, academic journals and newspapers. Science Online: A great place to start for all your science-based needs, whether you are preparing for the science fair or just have an interest in watching science themed videos.
K–12 Through College:
Brainfuse: Connect with a qualified tutor for expert help in math, science, social studies, English, English as a second language, computer literacy, test preparation (such as GED, SAT and ACT) and writing assistance.
Code.org: is an organization that provides free online coding classes for students of all ages. Students can learn to program while completing online modules.
Follett, a retail bookseller to Pre-K and K–12 schools and libraries, is delivering free at-home e-learning materials during the outbreak.
Gale has launched a COVID-19 resource center, with curriculum-aligned resources for students in pre-K through college, professional development e-books and more.
Khan Academy: Nonprofit that offers short videos on thousands of topics for kids of all ages, is having daily (weekdays) livestreams at Noon EST on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to assist students, parents and teachers navigating school closures.
Mango Languages prepares learners for realistic conversations and strengthens everyday communication skills in over 70 world languages.
