This week, we’re celebrating fruit, and what better way to start than with a joke? What fruit is green and square? A lemon in disguise! Ha ha! With that, let’s get started.
LEARN
Fruits are healthy foods that you can eat! They grow on a plant, and contain seeds.
QUESTIONS
- What is your favorite fruit?
- What color is an apple? What color is a banana?
- What shape is an orange? What shape is a grape?
- Is a lemon sweet or sour?
READ
Read any book you may have that mentions fruit. If you don’t have one, try a digital title! Or, you can order a book from the library, such as Nothing Rhymes with Orange or Kitchen Disco. We’ll also make a fruity book at the end.
SING
Apples and Bananas is a simple song that has only one line. It’s then repeated, stressing a different vowel, so kids can hear all the different vowel sounds. It’s really fun, and really silly.
I like to eat, eat, eat apples and bananas. I like to eat, eat, eat apples and bananas
(Long A sound) I like to ate, ate, ate, ay-pples and ba-nay-nays. I like to ate, ate, ate, ay-pples and ba-nay-nays.
(Long E sound) I like to eat, eat, eat ee-pls and ba-nee-nees. I like to eat, eat, eat ee-pls and ba-nee-nees.
(Long I sound) I like to ayt, ayt, ayt, ay-pls and ba-ny-nys. I like to ayt, ayt, ayt, ay-pls and ba-ny-nys.
(Long O sound) I like to owt, owt, owt, ow-pls and ba-no-nos. I like to owt, owt, owt, ow-pls and ba-no-nos.
(Long U sound) I like to oot, oot, oot, oo-pls and ba-nu-nus. I like to oot, oot, oot, oo-pls and ba-nu-nus.
DANCE
Go Bananas! This is a very active song where you pretend to be different fruits (and, okay, some vegetables), and then you go bananas!
If your child is a Baby Shark fan, there’s also Baby Monkey, who’s a big fan of bananas. Is the song too slow? Try the faster version for a real workout!
MATH
Fruits are great for sorting. Draw pictures of different fruits and then cut them out. Have your child sort them by color. Count up how many are in each category. Then sort them by shape and count them up. You can even make a simple graph to show the results.
Then sort them by yumminess!
CREATE
Did you know that you can create secret, hidden messages with fruit? It’s true! If you have a lemon, cut it in half and squeeze some of the lemon juice out. Add a few drops of water to it and mix. Dip in a cotton ball, q-tip, or paint brush (basically anything you can draw/write with) and draw on a white piece of paper. Let it dry and it’ll mostly disappear. Now, carefully put the paper under the light from a lamp and poof! Your drawing/writing will appear again!
Use the rest of the lemon juice to make lemonade!
MAKE YOUR OWN FRUIT BOOK
- Staple papers together and have each page represent different fruit.
- Write (or have your child write) the name of a different fruit on each page.
- Illustrate! Draw or cut out pictures for each page.
