From the Director, December 2020

What gets you out of bed in the morning? For some people, it’s seeing friends or going to restaurants. For others, it’s family or a favorite hobby.

For some, though, it’s a simple love of something light and fun, and maybe even seemingly trivial, that brings a smile to people’s faces. And that is what we’re celebrating this month at Orange County Library System. Maybe it’s Star Wars or Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe it’s romance novels or comic books or a TV show like Stranger Things. We’re celebrating all of it, and we hope you’ll get in the spirit and take part in our first celebration of geeking out on pop culture: Random Fandom

All of our locations are selecting fandoms to celebrate. When you visit your local branch, you may find decorations that offer a shout-out to a favorite movie or subculture. Many branches will offer take-home crafts to go, and our website will be full of fun virtual events you can log into from home. It’s OK to geek out about the things you love – in fact, we encourage it.

Speaking of fandom, we know that a lot of you are big fans of the library. At this time of year, we traditionally begin our annual appeal to our supporters to consider making a donation to the Friends of the Orange County Library, so they can continue to make our libraries the best they can be. We know it has been a difficult year for many, and COVID-19 has resulted in the loss of income for so many thousands of Central Florida residents. That’s why your support for the Friends this year is more important than ever – throughout the pandemic, our libraries have provided families with learning resources to help children succeed in school, access to important information about social services and ways for the unemployed to search for jobs in this very tight economy.

We can’t do it without your help. If you have it in your budget this year, I hope you’ll please consider making a donation to the Friends of the Orange County Library, an all-volunteer 501c3 organization that supports programs and services that aren’t covered by the library’s operating budget. To make a donation, visit ocls.info/donate. Every dollar you send our way helps us continue to provide support to the community.
