Summer has been a busy and exciting time at Orange County Library System and I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy some of the Summer At Your Library programming offered in branches, at pop-up events around the county and virtually. Nearly 5,000 kids and adults participated in our summer reading challenge, building literacy skills and inspiring lifelong learning. Offering ways for community members to learn, grow and connect is a vital role for OCLS.
August brings a host of programs and events for all ages: from plant clinics to storytimes, financial literacy to cooking classes. Several branches will host open sewing labs for crafters to contribute to Yarnfiti, our community-created art installation. This year’s theme is Enchanted Forest and handcrafted art contributions may be brought to any of our locations by closing on Friday, August 23 or brought to our Yarnfiti Installation Party from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 12 at Orlando Public Library.
I have the pleasure of announcing two notable author events. On September 20, romance fans can gather at Chickasaw Branch to hear popular romance writer Brenda Jackson share the inspiration behind her latest book at Romance, Wine and Chocolate. Tickets for this after-hours event go on sale August 1 and include a copy of Ms. Jackson’s latest book, The Cottage on Pelican Bay, complimentary wine and chocolate. You can purchase tickets at ocls.info/rwc but don’t wait – they sell out fast.
On January 24, we will host New York Times bestselling author John Green for the inaugural Lillian Louise Pharr Author Series. This new annual event is the result of a generous donation made by the late Roger Pharr, an Orlando native, tennis champion and Orlando Public Library volunteer. Mr. Pharr established an endowment with the Friends of the Orange County Library System in honor of his mother. An Evening with Author John Green, presented by the Lillian Louise Pharr Endowment Fund, will be held at The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and tickets go on sale September 9. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to gain deeper insights into Mr. Green’s creative process and hear firsthand about his experiences as a writer through a moderated conversation that details his literary journey and inspirations.
OCLS brings meaningful, engaging events and programs to Orange County residents through the generous support of our community. We look forward to seeing you at a branch, online or at an event in your neighborhood.
