Preschool Fun: Farm Animals!

Preschool Fun: Farm Animals!

Knock knock. (Who’s there?)
Cows go. (Cows go who?)
NO! Cows go moo!

In case you haven’t figured it out, this week’s preschool theme is farm animals! So, let’s have some fun!

Start by asking your child a few questions. This lets you hear their thoughts and makes them feel heard!

  • Where do cows live?
  • What sound does a cow make? How about a sheep? A pig?
  • What color are cows?
  • What do these animals eat?
  • What’s your favorite farm animal?

Next, read a book.

This can be any book that has farm animals in it. Point out the cows and pigs as you go. Check out an eBook through our Hoopla! And as always, we’ll make a book at the end to use as well.

Song time!

Start with a classic, such as “Old Macdonald Had a Farm.” After you sing your normal farm animals (cow, pig, duck, chicken, horse), add in some fun ones (dinosaur, robot, alien).

I’m also a fan of “We’re on the Way to Grandpa’s Farm.”

Game time!

Let’s pretend to be the animals! Can you pretend to be a cow? How about a pig? A chicken? A horse? Play Simon Says to keep the game going – Simon says moo like a cow, cluck like a chicken, oink like a pig.

Math time!

Let’s count! Grab some farm animal toys you may have (or draw some animals or print some pictures out). Have cups/bins/containers with different numbers taped on them (1–5). Have your child put the specific amount of animals in each bin. Discuss which has more, which has fewer.

Sensory play!

Take the animal toys and put their little feet in Play-Doh. Animal tracks! If you do not have animal toys, pretend you are the animal and guess what the tracks would look like. If you don’t have Play-Doh you can make a salt dough. (If you make salt dough, you can keep the final product!)

Another option is letting the toys play out in the dirt and then washing them off after. Messy, but kids like messy! And washing after is a good lesson about keeping clean.

Craft time!

Let’s make some simple farm animals.

Sheep: Draw or print out a sheep. Color and glue cotton balls onto it.

Cow: Draw or print out a cow. Finger paint dots on it.

Last, make your own farm book!

  • Staple papers together and have each page represent a different farm animal.
  • Write (or have your child write) “This is a ____” (e.g. This is a cow.)
  • Illustrate! (Draw, color, cut out pictures from magazines, print out pictures, etc.)
