South Creek Branch Blossoms with New Community Garden

South Creek Branch is proud to launch our new community garden to teach the benefits of sustainability and self-sufficiency to customers of all ages. We hope our garden will inspire and educate for years to come!

The community garden started out as an ambitious dream shared by the employees at the South Creek branch library:

Wouldn’t it be great if we were able to create a garden that could be used for programming, where children and adults could participate hands-on in learning the life cycle of plants and vegetables?

We reached out to the experts at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) to help us develop our green thumbs. They taught us the science behind gardening – the types of soil and bedding necessary for plants to successfully grow in our Central Florida climate.

Our neighborhood came together with donations, including gardening tools from Home Depot and soil from our lawn care service. Our library staff came ready with seeds and their own gardening knowledge and enthusiasm.

Strong fencing, a beautiful shade structure and comfortable new benches completed our future garden. After that, it was time to get down to business; kale, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and more were planted with love and care.

Our garden is flourishing, and South Creek is excited to present the first of many programs in this space:

We cannot wait to present many more programs at our beautiful community garden. These will range from children to adults, artistic to educational. We hope you stop by and see it for yourself!
