Connecting Through Culture and Community
Being connected to our community and building connections within our community are essential to the strategic plan that Orange County Library System unveiled in October. Since then, we’ve worked hard to find engaging and exciting ways to help our community unite with new ideas and experiences – online, in-person and at outreach events across the county.
Throughout April, we have a full slate of programs celebrating Arab American culture and heritage. Our youngest visitors can enjoy themed storytimes, while families can get hands-on with a variety of fun and educational activities. At Chickasaw Branch on April 7 and Orlando Public Library on April 16, we’ll be offering workshops on the intricate art of Arab Calligraphy, with an online session available on April 17. Meanwhile, at North Orange Branch on April 8, toddlers can explore a colorful world of vegetables through our Little Chef program, and teens will have the chance to make hummus from scratch at Hiawassee Branch on April 12.
It’s also a time to shine a light on the incredible people who make these programs happen – both the public faces you see at our events, and the behind-the-scenes staff who keep everything running smoothly each day. April 6–12 is National Library Week, and we’re celebrating not only the invaluable services we offer but also the wonderful library workers who make it all possible. During the week, stop by any of our branches or events to pick up a free sticker to show your love for library services – we’d love to see you!
For writers and aspiring authors, we’re offering our Traditional Publishing Boot Camp, a weekly virtual event held every Tuesday evening in April (April 1–29) at 7 p.m. If you’re looking for guidance on getting your work published, this event is a great resource to help you take the next step in your writing journey.
We’re also delighted to host a special performance of Alice in Wonderland by the Central Florida Ballet at Orlando Public Library on Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. It’s a fantastic opportunity for families and ballet lovers alike to enjoy a timeless classic brought to life by talented local dancers.
From hands-on cooking classes to art workshops and everything in between, there’s something for everyone this month. Be sure to check out all the details in this magazine, visit us at ocls.org or stop by your local branch to chat with us about all the exciting things we have planned. We can’t wait to connect with you!
